After the most refreshing and blissful beach yoga and ocean swim yesterday morning, the crew of Hana Tropicals headed to our friends, Dema and Ceazar's farm. Seated right next to the crashing waters of Wai'anapanapa, it’s a beautifully, well maintained piece of land owned by an obviously wealthy photographer of the celeb’s, David LaChapelle.
Walking up the drive way on two strips of cement decorated with animal and leaf imprints, we were surrounded by blooming fruit trees and fresh cut lawns. We approached David’s house, instantly impressed by the downstairs kitchen where Dema topped a massive salad with edible flowers and Ceazar pan fried pork. Dema, a Ukrainian always down for a swig of Vodka and a good time has worked here for four months, and Ceazar my country music lovin’ pal from the Phillipines, close to two years. After a delicious lunch (we contributed our usual rice and beans along with banana bread we had exchanged flowers for the night before,) a quick rest on the most comfortable hammock in the world, and a game of foosball, the two gentlemen took us on a tour of the farm.
Goats (one named Lady Ba Ba,) an outdoor gym, flourishing gardens, an abundance of fruit trees and an odd but charming little bar/ party shack, all grace the grounds. Dema filled us up with fresh coconut milk as he hacked away at more and more of them with his machete.
The owner of this oasis, Davie LaChapelle, takes interesting photographs to put it nicely. A book of his work sat on the coffee table, and as soon as I heard Chelsea snicker as she scanned the pages and look slightly embarrassed to be witnessing such pictures, I became intrigued to look. Just to name a few, Leonard Dicaprio, Elton John, Ryan Phillipe, David Beckham, and way more of Niome Campbell and Pam Anderson than I hoped to see, flaunted their stuff on the pages of the book in the most bizarre poses. It’s out of the ordinary to say the least, but if that gets this guy a piece of paradise on Maui, then more power to him.
His house, which looked straight out of a luxurious travel magazine, seemed to perfect to be lived in. High rise ceilings, beautiful beds with flowing canopies, showers lined with smooth little stones, the place is flawless, and to think he only comes here about twice a year……
Aloha :)
