Why did the chicken cross the farm?

Amy caught a mongoose the other day. We’ve noticed that no eggs were being found in the McMansion of our three little ladies, and blamed a mongoose as the culprit. Naturally, Amy put her detective skills to work and set up a trap with an egg as bait, and waited for her catch to come along. After trapping the lil beast (they’re everywhere here…) the only logistical way of killing it was to drown it in water, a task she took on herself. She’s tough, she’s Canadian.

So probably the day after this whole endeavor, as I brought dying orchids out of the nursery, I noticed something peculiar on my short journey. In a pile of empty plant containers and buckets, an ever so small amount of scrap padding nestled in a sideways bucket, in that sideways bucket sat about six or seven multicolored eggs. Ellen, Porsha and Uma have all been making more of an appearance than usual up in the nursery, little did we know of the activity that they took part in while up there.

Yesterday, they inched their way even closer, as Krista enthusiastically pointed out that one had situated herself in a knocked over plastic garbage can that we put compostable flower cuttings in while packing up boxes. We kept our distance, careful not to disturb the roosting, and it wasn’t too long before both other chickens joined her.

Funny little things those chickens….

That’s all I have today, even though I did tour a certain belated Liverpool Lad’s estate today! It’s killing me to keep my mouth shut about it, but must respect him and his widow’s privacy wishes. It’s nice to have connections in Hana. :)

Aloha.
